US, Japan to deepen nuclear power cooperation.

The United States and Japan announced on Wednesday a new agreement on the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies around the world in order to accelerate the transition from carbon fuels,reports quoting Teletrader.

The Winning an Edge Through Cooperation in Advanced Nuclear (WECAN) deal aims to “advance the latest technology and commercial leadership in emerging technologies that provide firm, reliable electricity and industrial heat,” according to an official statement.

“WECAN is designed to create viable projects for the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies to support energy security goals, facilitate power-sector decarbonization, and foster decarbonization in other energy sectors, like heavy industry,” the US and Japan explained. As the first project under the agreement, the two countries will aid Ghana to deploy small modular reactors by providing technical assistance and feasibility studies, among other support.
